Tool Choice Mode changes how much autonomy the model has when tools are available.
Navigator tool choice mode control

Modes

Navigator can decide when a tool is useful and call it during the response. Use this for trusted tools, research, data lookup, and routine automation.
Navigator asks before tool execution. Use this when tools can mutate data, spend credits, send messages, or operate external systems.
Tool calls are disabled for the conversation. Use this for pure reasoning, drafting, or when you want model output without external actions.

When to switch modes

You can still use @ mentions with manual control. Mentioning a tool narrows the available tools; the selected mode controls execution behavior.
